Full Circle Dreams
It all started with a kid from Scranton who had big dreams, a bigger appetite, and a mom who inspired him every step of the way.
Ryan Von Smith, aka Chef Von, took his passion for cooking from Wendy's on Wyoming Avenue all the way to Michelin-star restaurants and beyond.
But his love of cooking goes back even further to his mom, Francine. Francine Smith grew up in the kitchen, learning from her mother, grandmother, and her grandfather, the Rev. Elmer Smith, who ran Halftime Deli in Scranton.
Francine always dreamed of owning a restaurant, but life kept her busy with side hustles and catering gigs, while she held down two or three jobs. Cooking was always a part of her life, with family recipes passed down and perfected by eye, never a measuring cup in sight. When the pandemic hit, Chef Von came back to Scranton, turning out home cooked meals from his mom’s kitchen for friends, family and neighbors. The Smiths’ quickly became a not-so-secret spot for NEPA locals craving real, soulful food.
With lines out the door and a buzz spreading across town, Chef Von and Francine decided to turn that hustle into Chef Von & Mom. Francine retired from her job at Keystone and joined her son to bring their shared dream to life. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a love letter to Scranton, where every dish has a story, and every bite reminds you of home.
Now, Chef Von is back in Scranton, bringing bold flavors and unforgettable vibes to Linden Street with Chef Von & Mom. It’s American fusion with a twist, served up with a side of charisma and a whole lot of love. You’ve never met a mother-son duo like this before.
